California Brazil Camp began in 1997 as a way for lovers of Brazilian culture to truly learn a piece of the art that captivates so many of us. In addition to the programs Brazil Camp has become known for over the past decade, which include classes in styles from samba to frevo and Brazilian jazz to bossa nova, this year’s camp will offer some special new programs. The gafieira big band ensemble led by Jovino Santos Neto, and maracatu drumming and dance with Jorge Martins and Beto Guimaraes are only the beginning.
According to Brazil Camp Artistic Director Dennis Broughton, “The general consensus is that it’s not easy to find this type of learning opportunity anywhere else, even in Brazil.” Drummers and percussionists can participate in the nearly 100 member samba school bateria, in a jazz combo, or spend the afternoon studying traditional condomble rhythms. Instrumentalists and vocalists can choose from choro or jazz ensembles, big band or focus on some of the unique stylings of the composers in residence, along with specific instrument classes. Dance offerings focus on styles from different regions, such as samba do pe, afro-brazilian, samba reggae and forro, as well as special technique classes. In addition, beginning level classes offer all students an opportunity to experiment new possibilities.
Although camp is designed mainly for adults, supervised children are also welcome. To find out more regarding Brazil Camp programs, tuition, location and accommodations, please visit our website, http://calbrazilcamp.com .
